RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF POISONING CASES ADMITTED IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

Abstract :
Poisoning is a medical emergency causing significant morbidity and mortality throughout the world. It is important to know the pattern and severity of poisoning cases. This study was conducted to assess the pattern of acute poisoning cases in a tertiary care hospital in Assam. It is a retrospective hospital record based study. 122 cases of acute poisoning admitted in medicine ward were included. Poisoning was more common among males (77.05%) compared to females (22.95%). Most cases of acute poisoning presented among 21–30 year age group (51.64%). A majority of poisoning cases (37.70%) were due to organophosphorus compound. Associated co–morbid conditions were found in 27 cases (22.13%). The incidence of poisoning and morbidity and mortality can be reduced by developing and implementation of effective prevention strategies.
