Introduction : Personal hygiene and hand hygiene is now regarded as one of the most important element of infection control activities. Being the health care providers who have constant exposure to infections such hygienic practices among medical students are important. The poor personal hygiene contribute to cross transmission of microorganism and occurrence of infectious diseases. Objective: To find out any association between personal hygiene and morbidity pattern among undergraduate medical students Methodology : A cross sectional study was undertaken among undergraduate medical students during 4 week period. The calculated sample size was 300 using the formulae 4 PQ/d2. The data was collected using pre–tested self administered questionnaire which contain the details of personal and hand hygiene practices and morbidity pattern in last four weeks. Results: Out of 300 undergraduate medical students included in the study , more than half 178 (59.3%) of them had good personal hygiene and 122 (40.7%) of them had poor personal hygiene. But when hand hygiene practices were assessed, majority 216(72%)of them had good hand hygiene and only 84(24%) of them had poor hand hygiene. When the morbidity pattern was assessed 117 (39%) of students had more than two morbid conditions and 150(50%) of them were suffering from one or two morbid conditions in the past four week. There was a statistically significant association between personal hygiene practices and morbidity pattern among medical students (p value –0.004 ) Conclusion: The poor personal hygiene practices among medical students contribute to the occurrence of infectious diseases.
