A single centered observational study was started after getting approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee, Medicine department and Neurology department, at Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, Mumbai. The data collected from 600 patients during the period of 1st July 2018 to 30th July 2019, for calculating the WHO indicators. In the present study, out of 5208 drugs, only 29.05% of the drugs were prescribed by generic name and 70.95% were prescribed as branded drugs. In this study, out of 76 different types of drugs, 36 (47.36%) types of drugs were included in the National List of Essential Medicines, 2015 and 28 (36.84%) types of drugs were included in the WHO List of Essential Medicines, 2017. Considering the cost analysis of the present study, the average cost per prescription was 3,920.68 INR, out of which, the cost borne by the hospital was 2424.55 INR & the cost borne by the patient was 1496.13 INR.The study recommends that principles of rational prescribing should be followed as per standard guidelines like WHO and periodic evaluation of the drug prescription and utilization should be done to ensure the adherence, to increase compliance, to minimize the errors and encourage rational prescribing pattern.
