Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a potentially avoidable condition. Despite the well–known effectiveness of thromboprophylaxis, the use is not established entirely in clinical practice. The objectives of the study were to determine how often is effective thromboprophylaxis practiced in the presence of thromboembolism risk factors. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 medical inpatients admitted at PES Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kuppam from December 2018 to March 2019 were selected randomly in this retrospective observational study. Patients were assessed for VTE risk factors and effective thromboprophylaxis patterns according to the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) evidence–based consensus guidelines. RESULTS: As per the PADUA prediction score in our study, 66% of the medical inpatients were at a high risk of developing VTE, out of which only 27.2% received effective thromboprophylaxis. 66.6 % did not receive any thromboprophylaxis. 34 % were at low risk of developing VTE, out of which 11.76% received effective thromboprophylaxis. CONCLUSION: Thromboprophylaxis is underutilized in the at–risk population and thereby increasing the morbidity and mortality. It necessitates the need for raising the awareness about VTE risk and the strong demand for a standard hospital policy for VTE risk assessment and effective thromboprophylaxis in hospitalized patients.
