Abstract :
Background: Since 2002, Togo implements to reduce measles incidence, routine and supplemental vaccination, case–based surveillance and case management. Although measles surveillance data are available, there is no detailed analysis. We conducted this study to describe the epidemiological profile of measles confirmed at Laboratory in Togo from 2005 to 2014.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on measles surveillance data from August 2015 to January 2016. We reviewed laboratory records from 2015 to 2014, obtained from Togo’s National Laboratory Institute. We analyzed the data by person, place and time using Epi Info 7. We calculated frequencies, proportions and incidences.
Results: From 2005 to 2014, we recorded 3154 suspected measles cases of which 1224 (38.81%) laboratory confirmed cases with a median age of 5 years for confirmed cases. Children of 9 to 59 months old and those of 5–15 years old group represented respectively 47.55 % and 36.76 % of the confirmed cases. Among confirmed cases, 53.36 % were males and 87.58 % were vaccinated. Measles occurred with picks around January to March of each year. The incidence for 100 000 were 0.54, 0.49, 0.15, 0.93, 2.63, 2.04, 2.60, 3.66, 4.41, 2.22 respectively in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2014. .
Conclusion: Measles has globally a tendency to resurgence from 2005 to 2014 in Togo, with picks following a seasonality and occurring much more among children from 9 months to 15 years old. We recommend supplemental vaccination covering a largest target (9 months to 14 years) and to consider a second dose administration
