Abstract :
Sickle cell anaemia is one of the commonest single gene hematological disorder. In India especially in Western Odisha the disease is found predominantly in certain high risk communities like Agharia and Kulta. Aim of the present study was to study different haematological parameters in sickle cell anaemia and to correlate with clinical features and HPLC reports. This is a retrospective study done for 4 years in Department of Pathololgy, VIMSAR, Burla. Total 600 cases were studied (361 males and 239 females). Commonest clinical presentation was painful crisis. Complete blood count reports revealed lower Hb% level and TRBC; and high TPC, TLC, RDW, NRBC and Ret%. Ret–Hb was decreased in many cases due to associated nutritional iron deficiency. Patients with high HbF show low incidence of acute crisis.
