ROLE OF COMPUTERISED TOMOGRAPHY IN THE EVALUATION OF SOLITARY SOLID RENAL MASSES

Abstract :

When a solitary sold renal mass comes for evaluation the first issue is to decide if it is a malignant or a benign lesion. Ultrasonography and the CT scan are the most frequently used modalities for the initial diagnosis. CT imaging, especially with the use of contrast helps in diagnosis with greater accuracy and also helps in staging. In our study of 46 cases most of the masses were malignant with Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) being the most common mass. Contrast attenuation difference of >20HU in plain scan and corticomedullary phase indicated malignancy. CT scan has sensitivity of 75%, specificity of 77.8 % and accuracy of 76.7 % in diagnosis of solid renal masses and can over/ under–stage the local invasion in 6% cases.
