Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci isolated from corneal Specimens in a Tertiary Care Hospital of North East India

Dr. J. Hazarika, Dr. Samrat Biswas

Abstract :

Coagulase–negative staphylococcus (CoNS) species are among one of the most frequently isolated bacteria from corneal specimen in today. Present study was conducted to identify CoNS at the species level from corneal samples and determine the antimicrobial resistance pattern of these isolates.A total of 120 samples are screened and 42 isolates are CoNS with the predominant species S. epidermidis.A total of 14 antibiotics are used for antibiotic susceptibility test as per Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. All of the CoNS isolates were shown variable antibiotic sensitivity pattern. Thus taking into consideration the importance of coagulase–negative staphylococcus, a continuous surveillance and a regular update of their antibiotic susceptibility pattern on the basis of case–by–case scientific data are essential.
