EFFECT OF TWO DIFFERENT PROBIOTIC PREPARATIONS ON STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS

Abstract :

Background: Studies have established antibacterial effect of probiotic on Streptococcus mutans. The aim of the present study was to determine effect of two different formulations of probiotic on inhibition of Streptococcus mutans count in saliva. Materials and methods: A single–blinded study was conducted among 46 patients who were randomly divided into two groups, Group 1 receiving probiotic sachet and group 2 receiving probiotic drink. The participants were instructed to use the provided probiotic preparations for one month. To assess S. mutans count, plaque samples were collected at the baseline and after 1 month and microbial analysis was done to compare microbial count. Results: Both the groups showed statistically significant reduction in S. mutans count after the intervention. However, probiotic drink showed a considerably greater reduction in S. mutans count compared to probiotic sachet. Conclusion: Probiotic drink is more effective in reducing Streptococcus mutans count in the plaque than the probiotic sachet.
