Abstract :
Blood components are used for different indications; thus the component separation has maximized the utility of one whole blood unit. Blood inventory management is an essential part of quality assurance and monetary management which necessitates policy formulation based on institution specific data. Present study was conducted to analyze institutional packed red cell inventory and to find out relationship between issuable stock and time expiry wastage factor. Issuable stock index (ISI) and Time Expiry Wastage as a Percentage of Issues (TAPI) were calculated for one year inventory (28,500 packed red cell units) by retrospective analysis and review of relevant records in our blood transfusion centre. Average Daily Use Estimate of PRC for each blood group was calculated by multiplying the average blood use per day by the percentage of blood use by type. Minimal and optimal inventory values were determined by multiplying the average daily use by three and seven respectively. ISI and TAPI values were compared to test the correlation between them. Average packed red cell usage per day was found to be 71 units per day. Mean % of issue was maximum for O positive blood group (39.3%) followed by A positive, B positive, AB positive, O negative, A negative, B negative and AB negative blood groups. The relationship between ISI and TAPI for all the eight blood groups was found to be significant (P<0.00001) on applying Pearson’s correlation test. There is a strong correlation between the Issuable Stock Index (ISI) and Time Expiry Wastage as a Percentage of Issues (TAPI).
