Abstract :

Background: The term ‘Dermatoglyphics’ was derived from the Greek word, “dermis” meaning skin and “glyph” meaning curving. The study of epidermal ridge pattern on fingers, palm, and soles is known as "Dermatoglyphics”. Study of fingerprint patterns is considered to be the most reliable and absolute method of identification. Galton classified different fingerprint patterns on the basis of their primary pattern as loops, whorls and arches. Methods: In the present study we are trying to correlate the dermatoglyphic pattern of right and left thumbs with academic performance and extracurricular activities of medical students of Andhra medical college, visakhapatnam. The present study was conducted on a total of 250 1st year MBBS students (2019 –2020) of andhra medical college ,visakhapatnam,Andhra pradesh, india. For obtaining the finger print patterns of both groups, ink print method had been adopted. Results: In our study most frequent dermatoglyphic patterns seen on left and right thumbs of medical students are ulnar loops and whorls followed by arches and least frequently occurring radial loops. Conclusions: Loops were the predominant pattern observed in our study followed by whorls. Frequency of whorls and that of loops were almost equal in distribution.
