Abstract :

BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a major health issue in current scenario. Main ocular complications of Diabetes are Diabetic retinopathy, Keratopathy, Cataract and Glaucoma. AIM: To correlate the Central Corneal Thickness with Duration and Severity of type 2 Diabetes in Western Rajasthan MATERIALS & METHODS: This prospective cross sectional study was conducted on 120 patients, between the age group of 40 to 70 years. Patients were divided into three groups, without diabetic retinopathy (No DR) (N=40), non proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) (N=40), proliferative diabetic retinoapthy (PDR) (N=40) and 40 controls were included. Variables parameters were age, gender, duration of diabetes, glycosylated haemoglobin, Central Corneal Thickness (CCT), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). All results were analysed using appropriate statistical tests. RESULTS: Mean age of controls (in years) were 55.27±5.25, No DR 54.85±7.92, NPDR 56.45±2.11 and PDR 58.85±2.03. Mean duration of diabetes (in years) was No DR 3.01±0.53, 12.92±0.72 in NPDR and 16.3±0.93 in PDR. The mean CCT (in µm) in controls was 518.17±5.0, 527.15±9.17 in No DR, 537.05±13.22 in NPDR and 567.9±16.3 in PDR and the difference between the groups was clinically significant (p<0.001). CCT was also significantly higher with duration of disease and glycosylated haemoglobin (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Central Corneal Thickness was significantly increased with Duration and Severity of Diabetes. CCT assessment is mandatory in every patients of diabetes to detect the functional status of cornea.
