Abstract :

Breast cancer has replaced cervical cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in India. The most important indication for frozen section is to confirm the diagnosis of carcinoma if the FNAC or core needle biopsies are inconclusive prior to major radical surgery and to provide an assessment of resection margins in carcinoma. In this retrospective study the accuracy of intraoperative frozen section was determined for 100 cases reported in the last five years in Department of Pathology, SRIHER. The specificity was 100%, sensitivity was 98.4%, positive predictive value was 100% and negative predictive value was 96.9%. The accuracy of frozen diagnosis was 97 %. Our data analyses the clinical and pathological spectrum of cases that were sent as frozen sections and confirms that frozen section diagnosis is highly reliable and accurate guide to the surgical management of patients with east neoplasms and should be routinely used in all major tertiary care centres.
