Calorimetric and Thermogravimetric Studies in Para Tolune Sulphonic Acid (PTSA) Doped Polyaniline

Ratheesh R. And Viswanathan K

Abstract :

Conducting polyaniline (PANI) has been synthesized using oxidative chemical polymerization method containing para–Toluene Sulphonic Acid (PTSA) as a dopant and ammonium per sulphate as an oxidising agent. The prepared emeraldine salt (conducting) form was investigated by thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) studies. The TGA studies show that the polymer is thermally stable up to 200oC. Above this temperature the degradation of the sample starts due to the evaporation of the dopant. Above 600oC, the polymer degrades rapidly. The DSC analysis for the three doped samples shows two endothermic peaks at around 75o C can be assigned to the expulsion of moisture from the sample. The second endothermic peak at around 275o C–310oC is due to the thermal degradation of the material.
