Abstract :

Background: Extra–pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is relatively neglected and increasing in incidence, in comparison to pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in low–burden settings. It poses particular diagnostic and management challenges. Sparse literature is available regarding the relative contributions of extrapulmonary disease to the total number of tuberculosis cases from India as reliable epidemiological data are lacking This retrospective study was carried out to find the incidence and clinical profiles of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis patients of Magadh zone population Methods: An observational, descriptive, record–based study was conducted on TB patients admitted in indoor wards under various departments of Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College Gaya. Results: Of 80 study subjects, 73.8% were male and 25% belonged to 20–30 years age group. Records reflected 41.3% subjects had pulmonary TB, 51.2% had extrapulmonary TB and the rest had both pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB. House wife is most common occupational group infected with tuberculosis, second most common occupational group infected are students. Conclusions: This study shows extra pulmonary TB in concordance with pulmonary therefore EPTB also needs special attention to reduce TB burden because EPTB are difficult to treat and diagnosed both. By improving socioeconomic status proper treatment we can also reduce TB burden in India.
