Dr. P. Ramalingam, Dr. K. Rajeswari
Abstract :
The course and ramification of the lower limb vessels have received attention from anatomists and surgeons. There is a high risk of damage to the medial circumflex femoral artery after trauma, during surgery such as hip arthroplasty. This study was done in 50 adult lower limb specimens from 25 humancadavers in the Institute of Anatomy, Madras Medical College, Chennai by direct dissection method. The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of origin of MCFA and to find the distance of origin of MCFA from midpoint of the inguinal ligament; the mid inguinal point and from the origin of profundafemoris artery. The results were discussed in the article. Knowing the origin variability of the medial circumflex artery may help to avoid iatrogenic fault in several procedures to protect the vascular supply of the lower limb.
