A STUDY OF THYROID DYSFUNCTION IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL.

Abstract :

Objective: Diabetes is frequently encountered health problem worldwide. Various studies have shown the existence of thyroid dysfunction in diabetic patients. So we conducted a study to and out thyroid dysfunction in Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients . Research design and methods: Fifty patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus aged between 30 – 70 years were enrolled for the study. All the patients were assessed for thyroid dysfunction by investigating T3, T4 and Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Prevalence of thyroid dysfunction with age distribution, gender distribution, duration of diabetes and HbA1C was correlated. The observations were recorded and results obtained were analyzed by appropriate statistical tests. Results: Prevalence of thyroid dysfunction found to be 24% in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Thyroid dysfunction was more common in females when compared with males and subclinical hypothyroidism was most common ending. No correlation between age, gender, duration of diabetes or HbA1C levels between euthyroid patients and patients with thyroid dysfunction was found. Conclusions: Patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus should be screened for thyroid dysfunction.
