A Comparison of the effects of a direct and an indirect mutagen on the Meiosis of Barley
Vivek Singh
Abstract :
The success of any mutation eeding exercise lies in proper selection of mutagens for creation of mutations that can be selected for improvement programmes. Although numerous studies on Barley enlist a wide choice of mutagenic agents for mutagenesis but generally direct mutagens like EMS, MMS, dES etc have been conventionally tested. A comparison between an indirect mutagen like Sodium Azide and a conventional mutagen like EMS are very few. The present study compares these two mutagens on the basis of their ability to induce chromosomal aberrations. It is believed that more number of aberrations would lead to more number of heritable mutations. It would thus be easier to select the desired mutant for improvement programmes
