Abstract :
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a devastating illness that causes great suffering in afflicted individuals and imposes an enormous burden to society. Methods: It is a cross sectional study comprising hundred female patients with signs and symptoms of COPD and graded according to Global initiative for chronic obstructive lung disease (GOLD) spirometry strategy. For all the enrolled patients, clinical history was taken and investigations like chest X–ray, Spirometry were assessed. RESULTS: The majority of cases belong to age group 50 to 60 years. Most of the cases are from rural area and illiterates. 4% of the COPD females were smokers. Among non smokers biomass fuel exposure is the major risk factor. CONCLUSION: This study recognizes the prevalence of risk of biomass exposure in the development of COPD in women, especially from rural area. Health education on usage of cooking fuel is necessary to reduce the COPD incidence and prevalence. Considering COPD as a cause of shortness of eath in women with risk factors helps in early diagnosis and better management.
