Relation of Type 2 Diabetes and BMI with Auditory Acuity

Abstract :
Introduction: Diabetes–related sensorineural heå impairment affects people’s ability to hear and understand sounds. This is a case control study with the purpose of determining the heå loss in type II diabetes mellitus in relation to the BMI of the patients Method: 50 diabetic patients and 50 age and sex matched controls who have satisfied inclusion and exclusion criteria and have consented to participate in study were enrolled. They were evaluated by Tuning fork tests and Pure Tone Audiometry. Result: The heå of diabetics was significantly impaired than the non–diabetic control group. This heå impairment was noted in all the frequencies tested. The heå acuity was compared with BMI in diabetics. The heå acuity was not influenced by normal BMI levels. However at higher values of BMI, the heå loss was significant, particularly at the right side (right ear). The significance was more pronounced in case of obese individuals with BMI > 30.Conclusion: Type 2 diabetes causes significant heå loss in the patients, and it is affected by the higher BMI of the patient particularly BMI>30
