PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL–BEING AND DEPRESSION AMONG INHABITANTS OF OLD AGE HOMES OF JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN

Abstract :
The elderly population is large in general and growing due to advancement of health care education. These people are faced with numerous physical, psychological and social role changes that challenge their sense of self and capacity to live happily. In the above context, a study was conducted to understand the psychological well–being and depression among inhabitants of old age homes. This study was carried out on 60 elderly people (both males and females) of 60 years of age and above residing in selected old age homes of Jaipur city. The tools used for this study were Beck’s Depression Inventory and Ryff’s Psychological Well–being Scale. T–test was applied to check the difference of depression and psychological well–being among elderly males and females and the Karl–Pearson ‘r’ method was used to check the correlation. Result reveals that a significant difference in depression and psychological well–being with respect to both elderly males and females. While correlation between depression and psychological well–being among elderly males and females reveals that there is positive correlation among elderly males and a negative correlation among elderly females.
