Abstract :

Aim – To determine the Proportion of Open Angle Glaucoma in patients with Type 2 Diabetes and to identify the other risk factors associated in causing Open angle Glaucoma in patients with Type 2 Diabetes. Methodology: A cross sectional, analytical study was conducted in the Ophthalmology department on a group of 150 patients after the clearance from the college ethical committee. All the patients had presented to our department with type 2 diabetes. Open angle glaucoma was diagnosed by assessing the morphology of optic disc, intraocular pressure measurement and visual field testing. The required data was collected. The proportion of Open angle glaucoma was calculated. The other factors were analysed for an association with OAG. P<0.05 was taken as statistical significance. Results : There were 150 type 2 diabetic patients, who presented to our department from January 2018 to June 2019, satisfying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. 63 (42%) were females and 87(58%) were males. The proportion of OAG was 9.3%. The duration of diabetes (P–0.009), Fasting blood sugars(FBS) (P–0.001) and Body mass index(BMI) were significantly associated with OAG in diabetics. Other factors such as age, gender , hypertension, glycosylated hemoglobin ,dyslipidemia weren’t significantly associated to the presence of OAG. Conclusion: In our study, the proportion of OAG in diabetics was 9.3%. Thus, screening for OAG during screening for diabetic retinopathy can provide early detection of OAG thus, improving the prognosis of glaucoma.
