Microfinance and Women Empowerment: Evidence from India – Review of Literature

Abstract :
Development and growth of any economy is linked to socio–economic empowerment of its population. Microfinance today is a widely accepted tool for poverty alleviation and socio–economic empowerment of its beneficiaries. The beneficiaries being largely women, the empowerment of women through microfinance is a widely studied and debated issue. This paper reviews the literature on the role of microfinance on women empowerment in India. It looks into the positive and negative evidences and the challenges relating to women empowerment.
