FINANCIALIZATION: A REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Abstract :

 Financial system has never been such talked about topic, as it currently is. We read and hear about the events around the world in various media, along with their impact on (or any connection with) financial system. For example, “our financial markets improved because of Ms. X being chosen as the president of our country”. Increasingly, we see more number of people directly or indirectly employed and engaged in the financial markets. These trends which point towards increasing role of financial sector in our economy come under the ambit of “financialization”. This paper seeks to review some of the existing literature on “financialization” and to discuss about the various causes that various researchers have pointed out for the emergence of this phenomenon. Financialization and the economic crises’ link is then explored, with a focus on the housing bubble burst of 2007–08.
