Epidemiological and dependency study of tobacco and alcohol in a rural area of Chhattisgarh

Abstract :

Back Ground : Tobacco & Alcohol Abuse is widely prevalent habit in this region . Studies about it is important to increase the awareness , reduce the number of users and its dependency in them. Methods : Study was conducted to find out the dependency status of Tobacco & alcohol Consumption among rural residents of rural block of Chhattisgarh which was measured by KF SCORES & AUDIT SCORES respectively. A cross sectional study using Multi stage Sampling Method with house to house visits. Sample size came out 300. Study was conducted in Arang block of Raipur District. Statistical Analysis was done using SPSS & Epi Info Results: 182 (60.7%) of the residents were consuming smokeless tobacco in various forms. The trend of Karl Fagersrom Score was shifted more towards rural residents . 29.3% of the subjects consumed alcohol, higher AUDIT score in Tribal people & hence their dependence. Conclusions : Our study shows that the habit of Tobacco & Alcohol Consumption & its dependency is on the higher side among rural residents of this block
