Abstract :

INTRODUCTION: Dermatophytes are keratinophilic fungi affecting 20–25% of the world‘s population, with higher prevalence in tropical countries like India. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine prevalence of dermatophytoses and clinical correlation with laboratory diagnosis of dermatophytes.MATERIAL &METHODS: A total of 75 skin, hair and nail samples from clinically suspected cases of dermatophytoses, in all age groups and both sexes were collected and subjected microscopy and culture. RESULTS: Out of 75 samples tested, 35 were positive for dermatophytes. Prevalence of dermatophytoses is 46.66%.21–30 age group affected more withM: F=1.6:1.Most common clinical type wasTinea corporis (34.66%) followed by Tinea cruris (26.66%) and Tinea unguium (20%).T.ruum (28.57%) was the major isolated pathogen followed by T.tonsurans (22.85%) and T.mentagrophytes (20%).CONCLUSION: T. ruum’s ability to survive on the skin surface and to evade host defenses accounts for the high prevalence of infections with this fungus.
