Changing Interests In Fine Arts as a Profession: A Study In Sociology of Art

Abstract :
The present research paper in the field of Sociology of Art aims at understanding the choice of fine arts as a profession. It focuses on contemporary fine artists who are based in Baroda. The specific objectives are to understand the artists’ views regarding the parents’ encouraging or discouraging attitudes towards fine arts as a profession and to examine the artists’ opinions of parents’ approach to this choice through gender lens. The data was collected through in depth interviews of seventy fine artists of Baroda city. The sample was gathered through snowball sampling technique. Mixed method has been employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed that interest in art was encouraged till the activity was considered a hobby by some of the parents. In comparison, to men, women artists received more encouragement in pursuing fine arts. Commercialization of art has made fine arts a more acceptable profession.
