Agroforestry Research and Development in India: The Way Forward

Abstract :

Agroforestry has a long tradition in the Indian subcontinent. The socio–religious faic of the people of the subcontinent is interwoven to a very great extent with raising, cå and respecting trees. Agroforestry research in India was initiated more than hundred years ago with trials on tree–crop interactions in the tea estates, studies on silvopastoralism, intercropping experiments in plantation crops and successional studies in the ravines. Agroforestry initiatives also resulted in significant amount of wood production from outside the forestlands and promoted rural industrialization in certain localities which benefitted the small landholders and marginal farmers. Agroforestry R & D, have taken gear up by introduction of industrial tie up and proved huge potential of livelihood and environmental security of rural people. Recently, new agroforestry policy initiative will ing drastic change in counties tree cover and livelihood of people.
