Abstract :

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality is an important index for monitoring the progress of safe motherhood programs. But unfortunately maternal mortality rate of India is the highest in the world. Pregnancy and child birth related complication is the major cause of death among women in their reproductive age group. One such serious cause if maternal morbidity is pregnancy induced hypertension, for which creating awareness can significantly help in lowering the high risk cases. METHODS: An evaluative research approach with pre–experimental design was used. The sampling technique used was non – probability convenient sampling. Data was collected from 60 antenatal mothers from selected rural area at Vadodara. A pretest was conducted and immediately after they were given a structured teaching program on preeclampsia including various aspects. After a week a post test was conducted and the results were compared and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: In pretest there were 21% participants in average knowledge and no participants having good knowledge. In posttest it reveals that the study participants have maximum knowledge in the area preventive measure and care 85%, least knowledge in diet and exercise that is 81%. The posttest mean knowledge score is significantly greater than the pre–test mean knowledge score. The T calculated value is 40.361 which are more than the tabulated value of at 0.05 level of significance.. The calculated‘t’ value is 32.855 which is much higher than the tabulated‘t’ = 2.00 at 5% level of significance. This statistically proves the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme in all the areas of preeclampsia. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION: There is significant difference in the pre–test knowledge score and posttest knowledge score regarding preeclampsia among antenatal mothers in selected rural area of Vadodara. The study findings revealed that structured teaching program was highly effective in improving knowledge of antenatal mothers regarding preeclampsia.
