Abstract :

Aim: Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in India. Mutations in the p53 gene are among the common molecular changes detected in east cancer. p53 mutations and p53 protein accumulation have also been detected in benign east disease. These observations suggest that p53 changes can occur before the development of east cancer. The aim of the study is to analyze the expression of p53 in human east cancer as compared to normal east tissue and benign east lesions by immunohistochemistry. Also to assess the usefulness of p53 as a predictor of aggressiveness of east lesions. Materials and methods: Formalin fixed paraffin embedded sections of 10 cases of normal east tissue,20 cases of benign east lesions and 20 cases of malignant east lesions were taken up for the study and subjected to immunohistochemistry using p53. Results: The intensity of p53 immunostaining in normal east, benign and malignant east lesions was evaluated and scoring was graded as 0, 1+, 2+, 3+ and +4. Statistical analysis was performed with Chi-Square test and significant differences were noted between these 3 groups. ( p value< 0.05). Conclusion: .p53 expression correlated well with the grade and stage of tumor indicating that p53 positive tumors are biologically aggressive and are associated with poor prognosis but little is known about the implication of genetic alterations of p53 in benign east lesions.
