Abstract :

The present study was carried out with an objective to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal potentials of bark of Terminalia paniculata Roth. The aim was the study was to assess the antimicrobial activity and to determine the zone of inhibition of ethanolic (EtTP) and ethyl acetate (EATP) extracts of stem bark of Terminalia paniculata against medically important bacterial and fungal stains. The antimicrobial activity was assessed in the extracts using agar disc diffusion method. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of extract (100, 200, 400 µg/ml) of Terminalia paniculata were tested against three gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella typhimurium human pathogenic bacteria and one fungal strain Candida albicans. Zone of inhibition of extracts were compared with that of standard drug Streptomycin. The results showed that the significant inhibition of bacterial growth against the tested organisms. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrate, flavanoids, phenolics, steroids and alkaloids. The antimicrobial activity of Terminalia paniculata was due to the presence of various secondary metabolites. Therefore the bark of the plant can be used to isolate bioactive natural product which may serve as leads in the development of new pharmaceutical research activities.
