Abstract :

The present study area is the part of five mandals such as Chityal, Narketpally, Kattangur, Nakrekal and Tipparthi of Nalgonda district of Telangana State covering 538.7 sq.km of area. pH of the water samples were within the permissible limits of BIS limit (6.5-8.5) and WHO limits (6.5-8). Of the 65 samples, in pre monsoon, 2 samples (3%) and 63 samples (97%) area categorised as ackish water and fresh water respectively; in post monsoon 1 sample (1%) and 64 samples (99%) categorised ackish water and fresh water respectively. In the pre monsoon 33 samples (51%) had hard whereas 32 samples (49%) had very hard; and in post monsoon 36 samples (55%) had hard and remaining 29 samples (45%) had very hard nature. Calcium in all samples in the basin is within BIS permissible limit (200 mg/l) in pre monsoon (table 3) and post monsoon (table 4). WHO limit 75 mg/l satisfied 24 samples (37%) in pre monsoon and 34 samples (52%) in post monsoon. Magnesium in the samples, 61samples (94%) and 63 samples (97%) are within the BIS permissible limit in pre and post monsoon seasons respectively; and 40 samples (62%) and 43 samples (66%) are WHO permissible limit in pre and post monsoon seasons respectively. Sodium varies from the 56 mg/l to 298 mg/l with an average of 110 mg/l in pre monsoon and in post monsoon it varies from 41 mg/l to 275 mg/l with an average of 97 mg/l. Potasium in the pre monsoon varies from 1 mg/l to 62 mg/l with an average of 24 mg/l and in post monsoon it varies from 0.9 mg/l to 55 mg/l with an average of 22 mg/l. Chlorides in all samples fall in the BIS permissible limit (1000 mg/l) in pre and post monsoon whereas 61 samples (94%) in pre monsoon and 63 samples (97%) in post monsoon are within WHO limits; remaining 4 samples (6%) of the samples in pre monsoon and 2 samples (3%) in post monsoon are beyond the WHO limits. All samples fall in the BIS permissible limit (400 mg/l) and WHO limit (500 mg/l) in pre and post monsoon seasons. Regarding fluoride 11 samples (17%) fall in the BIS permissible limit and WHO limit (1.5 mg/l) in pre and post monsoon where as in post monsoon 54 samples (83%) satisfied the same limits. Remaining 54 samples (83%) in pre monsoon 11 samples (17%) in post monsoon season has beyond the limits which are not suitable for drinking.
