Evaluating Musculoskeletal Complications Among Individuals With Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract :

 Background and objective: To investigate the effect of age variations on anthropometric parameters and its relation with physical efficacy and cardio-respiratory fitness profile of the backward class populations of the society. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 100 of Sauthal, Munda and Lodha tribal student (boys) populations at eastern zone of Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal, India. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate were measured following standard experimental procedure. The ‘Queen’s College Test’ method was employed for the physical fitness test. Handgrip or forearm muscle strength and endurance power was measured with the help of handgrip dynamometer. The ‘Sit & Reach Test’ was accepted for the measurement of hand muscle flexibility. Results: Results revealed that height of the non-tribal students for each of the age groups of 13 to 14, 15 to16 and 17 to 18 years was found significantly (P<0.02, P<0.001) higher in compare to the tribal students. Body weight were found significantly (P<0.02, P<0.01, P<0.001) higher in tribal students in compare to non-tribal students for the same age group. For the selected tribal subjects handgrip strength and hand muscle endurance significantly differ (P<0.001) with the experimental non-tribal subjects for all the age groups of 13 to18 years. Alongside these two parameters indicated significant positive correlation with age, weight and height. The diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate and respiratory rate of tribal students under same selected age groups following structured physical exercise was found significantly (P<0.01) low in respect to non-tribal students which indicated a better physical durability Interpretation and conclusion:. The higher values of physical fitness and augmented agility, higher working ability of the tribal students than that of the non-tribal might be due to their significantly higher body weight, ample nutritional status and daily basis physical fitness activity for continuation of general livelihood.
