Abstract :

Introduction: Dental caries is a disease with multifactorial causes. The prevalence of dental caries in a population is influenced by a number of risk factor such as sex, age, socioeconomic status, dietary patterns and oral hygiene habits. Aim: Prevalence of dental caries in school children in Zilla Parishad schools, Pune. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study of the population of all students (630) attending Zilla Parishad schools in Pune from grades 1-7 and aged 6-14 years in a one month (March 2014) study period. Result: Amongst school children in Zilla Parishad, there were 472 students out of 630 who were examined to have dental caries. This gave an overall prevalence of 74.92%. There were only 158 children (25.08%) who were caries free. Conclusion: There stands an urgent need to spread awareness and educate school children on basic technique of maintaining proper oral, dental hygiene, and restorative care for dental caries.
