Evaluating Musculoskeletal Complications Among Individuals With Diabetes Mellitus

Dr. Simran Maheshwari, Dr. Subhan Quraishi, Dr. Babita Ghodke

Abstract :

Bisphosphonates have been a major research subject among dentists due to them being involved in BRONJ or Bisphosphonate-related Osteonecrosis of the jaw. The osteonecrosis of the jaws  (ONJ) is an adverse side effect of long-term bisphosphonate therapy (BPT) first described in  2003. The aetiology of BRONJ remains unknown, and the pathogenesis seems multifactorial and related to several local or general factors. BRONJ has been described in patients taking   bisphosphonates after oral surgery procedures, including the placement of dental implants. Several preventive protocols have been developed to facilitate the multidisciplinary management of BRONJ patients. Discontinuation of oral bisphosphonates for a period of three months prior to and three months following elective invasive dental surgery may lower the risk of BRONJ, with the permission of the physician. So a thorough understanding of Bisphosphonates is essential for every implantologist. This presentation delves into the cellular and molecular mechanism behind BRONJ and hopes to shed light into its intricacies and predisposing factors.
