Abstract :
The arterial circle of willis is situated at the base of ain around the optic chiasma and interpeduncular fossa. Anteriorly the anterior cereal arteries (from the carotids) are joined by the anterior communicating artery; Posteriorly the basilar artery divides into two posterior cereal arteries, each joined to the ipsilateral internal carotid by a posterior communicating artery. Though many workers have reported abnormalities in the diameter of the vessels forming the circle of willis, the normal dimensions of these vessels have been not reported. The vessels have been described as, narrow, thread like, string like. But actual diameter has rarely been measured. It increasing utilization of angiography and development of cereovascular surgery. Present study included MR Angiographies of 132 patients, observed mean diameters of Rt. Posterior communicating artery is 1.2mm,Lt. Posterior communicating artery is 1.2mm and Anterior communicating artery is 1mm.Variations only communicating arteries are Hypoplasia anterior is 15.15%,posterior is 23.48% and Absence anterior 37.02%, posterior is 33.33 is noted. The need for diamensional data for vessels is expressed by neurosurgeons and radiologist as well as researchers but no compressive measurement have been published, especially the Indian data.
