Effect of ZrO2 on the reaction sintering of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system in the Cordierite composition

Abstract :
Present investigation was undertaken to synthesis and characterize pure cordierite and cordierite-Zr O2 composite by solgel technique form dehydroxylated kaolinite, precipitated silica and Mg(NO3 ) 2 in presence of Zr O2 . The gels are dried and sintered at different temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1350°C. Magnitude of sintering was determine by measuring some fired characteristics including shrinkage, apparent porosity and true density. The evolution of crystalline phases and the microstructures have been studied using X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. The results obtained clearly demonstrate that the mechanical properties and the microstructure were critically dependent on the Zr O2 content and the retained porosity
