Abstract :
This study evaluated the effects of dry Moringa oleifera and Solanum macrocarpon L. leaf extracts in diabetes induced rats. The proximate, mineral, vitamin and phytochemical composition of both dry Moringa oleifera and Solanum macrocarpon L. leaf extracts were analysed. Twelve adult albino rats were used for the study. Each group consisted of four rats and they were allotted on the basis of body weight so that the difference between two groups will not be more than 5g. Alloxan was used to induce diabetes mellitus in the three groups of rats. Rats in group A received dry Solanum macrocarpon L. leaf extract (at 10% protein level) as a source of fluid. Rats in group B received dry Moringa oleifera leaf extract (at 10% protein level) as a source of fluid. Rats in group C received water as a source of fluid and this group served as the control. The results showed that the ash, crude fie, fat and moisture contents of both samples were comparable (p > 0.05). The ash content of dry Moringa oleifera and Solanum macrocarpon L. leaf extracts were 0.04%, each, fat was 0.001%, each, crude fie was 0.00%, each and moisture was 96.68 and 97.49%, each. The protein content of dry Moringa oleifera and Solanum macrocarpon L. leaf extracts were 0.66 and 0.43%, each and differed significantly (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the carbohydrate content of both samples (p > 0.05). The iron, beta–carotene and vitamin C contents of dry Moringa oleifera were higher than that of dry Solanummacrocarpon L. (p <0.05) while the latter had higher calcium level (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in their flavonoids and alkaloids contents (p > 0.05). The blood glucose of rats in groups A and B were lower (141 and 167mg/dl) than that of the control group (257mg/dl). The difference was significant (p < 0.05). Rats in group A had the lowest serum glucose and did not differ significantly from rats in group B( 167mg/dl).
